On November 21, 2024, SEC Chair Gary Gensler announced his departure from the SEC on Twitter (nobody calls it X) to take effect on January 20, 2025. The SEC contemporaneously issued a press release announcing the news and recounting the agency's accomplishments under Gensler's tenure. For what it's worth, I consider Mr. Gensler to have been the most effective Chair of the SEC during my continuing tenure of over 20 years practicing as a capital markets lawyer. Not only did Mr. Gensler lead the SEC through COVID providing regulatory clarity at a time when clarity was crucial, he also implemented the most extensive regulatory reforms of the CFTC while he was leading that agency in the wake of Lehman's insolvency. I believe Mr. Gensler embodies a true commitment to the public good of the United States and the entire world of capital markets. The world would be a better place if more were like him.
